Paul Sculthorpe: Power & pace make Lee Gilmour a player to fear

Jul 29 2009

by Paul Sculthorpe, Liverpool Echo

SOMEONE was asking me recently about the strongest players, pound-for-pound, I played with.

There are some good candidates I have to say.

But one who springs immediately to mind is Saints' Lee Gilmour.

Nobody should be fooled by Gilly's wiry physique, although I suspect some opposition players have been over the years and have had to learn the hard way.

He is a very strong individual.

I used to do some wrestling with him at St Helens, so I know what I'm talking about!

If you ally his freakish strength to his pace, you can see why he has been so successful for Saints over the years.

He has also shown great versatility; a quality the modern coach loves.

We've largely used him as a second row or a centre but he could probably play other positions if needed.

Another major asset to the club has been Gilly's eye for the try line. He has a knack of popping up in big games to get crucial scores.

It was announced recently he will be leaving Knowsley Road at the end of the season to join Huddersfield.

He was offered a one year deal at Saints but the Giants were able to give him a two year contract.

That's fair enough.

Huddersfield will be getting a player who gives 100% every time he steps out.

And that's exactly what he'll be giving Saints for the remainder of this season.

Like Sean Long, he will want to go out having picked up some more silverware.

Warriors showdown looks a derby treat

IT was good to see Wigan do Saints a favour on Friday night by beating Leeds.

It allowed us to go two points clear of the Rhinos at the top of the table.

Sadly, I doubt they'll be in the mood to do us another one and give us the points when we play them this Friday.

It promises to be a typically feisty derby.

The Warriors seem to have hit good form at the right time and having looked like they may not make the play-offs for much of the season, they are now nicely inside the play-off zone.

You can bet both sides will be pulling out all the stops as we enter the last five games of the regular season.

I don't think the fact both teams are in Carnegie Challenge Cup semi-final action a week later will have any bearing on Friday's match.

There are two important league points up for grabs and both sets of players will only start thinking about the Cup once they have been decided.

  • Here are my tips for the other engage Super League games this weekend: Hull v HUDDERSFIELD; Salford v WAKEFIELD; CATALANS v Celtic; LEEDS v Warrington; BRADFORD v Harlequins; Castleford v HULL KR.
