Paul Sculthorpe: Result of Grand Final could hinge on both sides’ kicking games

Oct 15 2009

by Paul Sculthorpe, Liverpool Echo

THE difference between winning and losing at the top level in rugby league can sometimes be very small.

The facts show Leeds outscored Saints three tries to one to take Saturday's engage Super League grand final 18-10.

In truth, it could have gone either way.

Our lads will be disappointed we didn't make more of a first half when we enjoyed the majority of the field position.

I thought it was one of the most solid 40 minutes we've played for a while.

But from 8-0 up with ten minutes of the half left we found ourselves going in at 8-8.

I'm sure we'll feel the two tries we conceded in the run-up to the break could have been prevented. It was that type of game.

It just boiled down to a few errors and a few chances taken or missed.

Of course, there is another significant factor: refereeing decisions. Or in this case, video refereeing decisions!

At 11-10 down coming into the closing stages, we were well in the match.

I'm sure with our big game experience we'd have known how to handle that situation.

It would have been a question of staying calm, establishing field position, then taking an opportunity, be it a try, penalty or even a drop goal to level the scores.

That was until Lee Smith was awarded a try from Danny McGuire's kick through.

I don't know what type of television screen video ref Phil Bentham was watching, but it must be different from the one I saw it on.

For me, Smith was offside.

Soon as I saw the replay I breathed a sigh of relief because I was convinced.

But after looking at it a number of times, Bentham gave the try.

With Sinfield kicking the goal, it gave Leeds a seven point lead and changed the whole nature of the last few minutes. They were never going to give it up from there.
