Scott Moore hoping to stop Saints but return home

Aug 7 2009

by Ross Heppenstall, Liverpool Daily Post

SCOTT MOORE is confident he has a future at St Helens – but that will not stop him trying to dump his current employers out of the Carnegie Challenge Cup on Sunday.

The 21-year-old hooker has flourished during a loan spell at Huddersfield this season and will line up for Nathan Brown’s men against Saints in the Cup semi-final at Warrington.

For Moore personally, the clash has thrown up the curious prospect of battling against his hometown club, for whom he made his debut at the age of 16.

He was forced to go out on loan again this year due to Saints boasting arguably the best two hookers in the British game in Keiron Cunningham and James Roby.

Yet Moore has thrived at the Galpharm Stadium under Brown’s astute guidance and earned an England call-up after becoming a pivotal figure in a high-flying Huddersfield side who are aiming to end Saints’ remarkable 18-match winning streak in the Cup.

Saints have lifted the famous trophy in each of the past three seasons but Moore has no qualms about trying to end that glorious run this weekend.

Moore said: “There has been a lot of banter flying around this week with text messages between myself and the lads at Saints.

“I’ve been on the books there since I was 13 and have got so many fond memories of growing up at the club. I’m very good friends with a lot of the lads, so it will be great to play against them.

“Hopefully I can get one over on them and rub it in a bit.”

Cunningham, meanwhile, has yet to decide whether he will play on beyond the end of the current campaign.

His retirement could pave the way for Moore to stake his claim for regular first-team football at St Helens next season.

And a strong performance in Sunday’s semi-final will send out another telling reminder of his class to Saints coach Mick Potter.

“There’s definitely an extra incentive to do well on Sunday,” admitted Moore. “Playing Saints makes me even more determined to win because I’m coming up against a lot of my mates – the likes of Kyle Eastmond, Jon Wilkin, James Graham and Bryn Hargreaves.

“And I’m definitely going back there next year regardless.

“I’ve got another year on my contract but I’m not really looking beyond that at the moment.

“I’m just enjoying playing for Huddersfield and hopefully I can go back to Saints and make a difference.”
