WARRINGTON coach Paul Cullen admitted his side was delighted to have taken the two points after they had not been at their best as they ground out a hard-fought 38-30 victory over Wakefield.
A try five minutes from time from Wolves stand-off Nathan Wood sealed the win. The home side were clinging to a two-point lead at 32-30 when Wood threw an outrageous dummy and cut through the Wildcats defence for the decisive score and Chris Bridge landed the conversion to seal the win.
Cullen said: "We were not at our best and that is not to detract from the Wakefield effort.
"But we scored some very good individual tries and in games like this, after the exhilaration of beating Bradford last week, you need something a little bit special to poke your nose in front.
"You have got to give credit to Wakefield and acknowledge their part in what was a decent game and also acknowledge that we left a little bit at Odsal and if we factor that in it was a very decent two points.
"It could have been after the Lord Mayor's Show but we fought hard and had enough class and quality not to allow that to happen."
Wakefield coach Shane McNally was upbeat despite the defeat, saying: "We played a lot better today and I'm pretty upbeat after today's performance. We have to keep working hard and keep our nerve and things will turn our way very shortly."
Wakefield had made a dream start and crossed for two tries in the opening nine minutes to take an early 10-0 advantage.
Hooker David March darted over from close range and then winger Semi Tadulala plucked Jamie Rooney's bomb out of the air to touch down with Rooney adding one conversion.
But the Wolves reply was emphatic as they took control with five tries to lead 24-12 at half time. New Zealand forward Logan Swann touched down twice while Martin Gleeson sprinted 60 metres after being sent clear by a wonderful pass by Lee Briers and then Gleeson turned provider when he sent winger Henry Faa'fili over in the corner.
