WATERLOO, still without a win and bottom of National Two, found some encouragement despite losing at Blackheath.
A gutsy first-half performance, with both sides even 5-5 at the break, gave hope that the visitors were still in with a chance to take the game.
But with the home side upping the intensity in the second period, Waterloo's inability to last the course was cruelly exposed. Yet if they can work on what went right in the opening half and replicate that for a full 80 minutes there is no reason why they should not come up with that all-important first win.
Waterloo were given every incentive as superb support play and slick interpassing along the backline created a try for Neil Kerfoot. Unfortunately the opposition replied in kind with a try from Alex Page.
In the second half two converted tries in the space of two minutes left Waterloo trailing 19-5. They never recovered as a further try and a penalty pulled Blackheath 27-5 clear.
Waterloo hit back with a try from Steve Dodd off a break by Peter Ince, converted by James O'Brien, but with the loss through injury of both props plus the replacement the Merseysiders were up against it.
They paid the price as a penalty try and two further converted tries gave Blackheath a flattering winning margin.
