FOLLOWING Waterloo’s annual meeting and its lengthy discussion of the club’s current situation in the middle of Division Two, a special and high level working party is currently being set up to look into prospects for the future. Long-serving press officer Ian Hamilton Fazey has agreed to take charge, and has found plenty of others willing to give their enthusiastic support. Several of them have valuable managerial and financial experience; something vital for the club to quit Blundellsands and move elsewhere. Fazey, has already pointed out that one or two alternative sites, including one near the Formby by-pass, could enable Waterloo to expand and develop their base so that four or five pitches could be set up close together. The benefits of the proposed move are obvious whether or not Waterloo decide it would be better to attend alone or alternatively link up with others like Marine AFC or Northern Cricket club. Unfortunately, as they all know, costs of the move could become exorbitant and it could be extremely difficult to maintain and increase support while the move is going on. Fazey has stressed that he is impressed with the size and strength of support within Waterloo, he said: “A large number of people have volunteered to serve and we have a complete range of professional services within the club, ranging from lawyers, successful entrepreneurs, accountants and bankers. “I expect to use them to form specialised task forces to provide the facts and options on every question the core group asks.” Most important of all Fazey insists the club will start ‘with a black sheet of paper’, and will rule nothing in or nothing out. Finance is of course, the key factor, so it is fortunate Waterloo have a lot of highly professional members who should be capable of guiding the club in the right direction. The bulk of them appear to be in favour of moving, but one of two have written in to warn of potential problems, partly due to support for such moves sometimes failing to reach its target. Member John Wainwright is one of those who feels Waterloo’s current location is an excellent one, and that a move may take the heart out of the club. However, the majority of members are clearly in favour. Whatever the result of the coming discussions, any decisions will have to be made fairly quickly if it is to succeed and the key factors are obviously going to be finance and the willingness of members to put their hands in their pockets. Waterloo will have to make sure they can raise a good deal of money if they are to make the suggested move successful, so let’s hope some of the most financially oriented members really are willing to give their full support. |
