Michael Vaughan backs Peter Moores despite criticism

Oct 30 2009

by James Pearce, Liverpool Echo

MICHAEL VAUGHAN insists he respects Peter Moores and believes the former England coach will turn Lancashire into a trophy-winning team.

The 35-year-old, who retired from the sport earlier this year, has been highly critical of Moores in his autobiography ‘Time To Declare’ which was published this week.

Vaughan revealed when he skippered the national team he tried in vain to forge a successful working relationship with Moores and found it tough to adapt to his methods.

Moores, who took over at Lancashire after being sacked by England in January following a fallout with Kevin Pietersen, is accused of treating players “like school kids”.

However, the ex-Yorkshire batsman admits he was partly to blame for their failure to click and is backing Moores to end Lancashire’s long wait for silverware.

“The book is a very honest assessment of my career,” he said. “I’ve been very positive about a lot of people and I don’t think I’ve hung anyone out to dry. In 18 years of playing you can’t get on with everyone. When I was England captain I got on very well with Duncan Fletcher but when Peter took over as coach we didn’t see eye to eye.

“I’m sure if you ask Peter now he would say he wishes he had done some things differently and I certainly would have done.

“I was coming towards the end of my tether in terms of the captaincy when he was coach and I was getting very drained. I was as much to blame as he was.

“When Peter got released by England I’d have liked him to have gone to Yorkshire. I’m sure he would have done a good job there.

“He’s had a good first year at Lancashire and there’s no question Peter will make Lancashire into a winning side.

“He’s done it before in county cricket with Sussex and is one of the best in the business in county cricket.

“I’d say Peter works well with a new team. You can’t help but respect him as a person.”

  • Michael Vaughan will be signing copies of ‘Time To Declare’ in Waterstone’s in Liverpool One on Monday from 1pm.
