LIGHT-HEAVYWEIGHT knockout king Tony Bellew issued another statement of intent to British and Commonwealth champion Nathan Cleverly.
Liverpool’s ‘The Bomber’ scored a TKO victory over Jindrich Velecky, the supposedly heavy handed Hungarian, when referee Phil Edwards stopped the bout at 1 minute 28 seconds of the first round.
The sensational stoppage win improves Bellew’s professional record to 11-0 (7) and fuels talk of a showdown with Welshman Cleverly in 2010.
Promoter Frank Warren says the two are on course for the mouthwatering clash which he believes will rekindle the classic fight nights of Nigel Benn and Chris Eubank.
Asked what Cleverly will have made of the fight, Tony Bellew said: “If I see someone blow the other guy away who has had 16 wins and 15 of them by KO, I would be thinking ‘what is going on’, I just blasted him. World champions didn’t do what I have done – I am a smashing machine, I’m going to smash you and I will just punch and punch and punch. If Cleverly is watching tonight then all I will say is beware, because when I get my hands on you, you will be champion no longer. I am going to rip that belt from you and do a number on him like no-one has ever done before.”
Meanwhile, the first of the three Smith brothers to box on the bill was 24-year-old Stephen who is proving himself to be a classy operator, this time wining a 79-73 points decision over the durable Gavin Reid.
Younger sibling Liam ‘Beefy’ Smith won a unanimous points victory over Darren Gethin in a middleweight contest over four rounds to extend his record in the pro ranks to 4-0.
The final of the hometown fighters on the bill was Joe Selkirk who stopped Alex Spitko after 26 seconds in the last of their scheduled four rounds to make it 3-0 now for the former England amateur international.
