Fight night soured by Jason Rushton collapse

Oct 26 2009

by Nick Peet, Liverpool Echo

FRIDAY’S night’s quality Bolton Arena card was soured in the closing stages when Doncaster’s Jason Rushton needed to be rushed to hospital for emergency brain surgery, which forced the rest of the bill to be cancelled.

At the time Wallasey’s Brett Flournoy was two rounds into his fight with Scotland’s Kevin McIntyre, that fight being scored a no contest.

While the Scouse ‘Lord of the Flies’ match-up between Paul Edwards and Mike Robinson was scrapped completely.

Rushton remains in a drug-induced coma after being stopped in the Central Area light-middleweight title fight.

He was stopped with just one second left in the 10th and final round, moments after being floored by Blackpool prospect Brian Rose in Bolton.

The 26-year-old was able to leave the ring, albeit unsteadily, but collapsed in the backstage area and was rushed to hospital seemingly having suffered a bleed on the brain.

An operation was carried out to relieve pressure before he was placed in the drug-induced coma.

Rushton’s own corner team and referee Steve Gray are both likely to be pulled up before the Boxing Board of Control in the aftermath of Rushton’s collapse.

The game challenger was simply too brave for his own good and the decision to stop the fight should have been made much sooner.
