Hatton fight threat

Jul 28 2004

Ricky Hatton

RICKY HATTON'S clash with WBA light-welterweight champion Vivian Harris is on the verge of falling apart, according to reports.

Hatton's promoter Frank Warren is report-edly cutting the agreed purse by 25%, angering Harris and his US promoters Main Events.

The fight was announced two weeks ago and looked set for Manchester's MEN Arena in the first week in October.

But American reports have suggested that Warren is under intense pressure to land a frustrated Hatton a world title tilt before the end of this year.

Two weeks ago Warren had reached terms for the fight to go ahead but now, "there is no fight, it is just not acceptable," said Kathy Duva, the CEO of Main Events

Harris' new trainer/ manager Emanuel Steward, the man who was so successful in the corner of Lennox Lewis, believes that Hatton needs to put his foot down and demand the fight be made.

"I think the real force behind this situation is Ricky Hatton himself," Steward said.

"He wants to have the fight and he feels that he is tired of fighting these secondary championships. I think he is going to force the fight to take place."
