TRIBUTES have been pouring in for Liverpool Harriers legend Ernie Gallagher who has died at the age of 81.
The former teacher from Garston had been associated with the club for 64 years.
A talented middle distance runner, Gallagher went on to become a highly respected coach and was the club’s honorary secretary.
He was still passing on tips to the club’s youngsters this summer but last weekend he lost his battle with cancer.
Harriers vice-president and friend George Bunner said: “Ernie joined the Harriers in 1943 and was a multiple trophy winner over many years at both county and northern level.
“Throughout his life Ernie was a loyal and dedicated servant to Liverpool Harriers and in 1997 was honoured as UK coach of the year. He was also awarded a lifetime achievement award by City of Liverpool.
“He served as an outstanding secretary and has left a lasting legacy by positively improving the lives of so many young people.
“Ernie made a great impact on our sport and will be sadly missed.”
Former county athletics development officer Tom Carson added: “Ernie was passionate and experienced and did not suffer fools gladly. He was a gentleman and a dedicated coach. His heart and soul were with Liverpool Harriers.”
His funeral takes place at 11am on Friday at Springwood Crematorium, followed by a reception at Harriers’ clubhouse.
