Basketball: Pressure on Everton Tigers to stop the rot

Oct 23 2009

Liverpool Echo

EVERTON TIGERS will be desperate to stop the rot as they head into another double header of games this weekend.

Having tasted defeat at the hands of the Cheshire Jets and Newcastle Eagles last time out the Tigers return to Greenbank Sports Academy to host the Worcester Wolves tonight.

Tigers head coach Tony Garbelotto is seeking a vast improvement from his men this weekend and has identified the areas that his team need to improve.

He said: “'For me, these next two games are must wins. We cannot afford to drop any more games if we want to be considered a top team.

“We can score 90 points on almost any game. Our challenge is simple, to stop other teams from scoring.

“After a really solid week of preparation where we will really start getting into our defensive stuff I feel we will be ready. We are like a sieve at the moment – just leaking baskets.

“If everything goes according to plan, Steven Rush will finally make his debut against Worcester.”

Tonight sees the return of former Everton Tiger Chuck Evans to Greenbank, as the former Euroleague point guard is now in charge at the Wolves.

Garbelotto is looking forward to the challenge Evans’ side will bring.

He added: “It will be an interesting game against Worcester. It will be the return of Chuck Evans to our club and I am excited to see him coach against us.

“His team is deep, although we have a pretty big front line so it will also be interesting to see how they cope. They will run and be able to score.

“They are pretty deep in the back court and have a few guys that can really shoot the ball, so it will be important for us to play with intensity right from the start.”

Less than 24 hours later, the Tigers face Guildford Heat for the second time in less than a month when they travel to Surrey tomorrow.

The Heat will be looking to exact revenge after being edged out by the Tigers in the ECHO Arena in the Blues’ first home game of the season.

Since then, the Heat have enjoyed mixed fortunes.

Having exited the BBL Cup to MK Lions last Friday they then turned in an impressive performance to overturn the Newcastle Eagles last Saturday.

The Tigers boss is well aware that his side will be facing a team high in confidence.”
