Mixed Martial Arts: Stars of future roll into town in city’s biggest cage fighting showcase

CAGE Gladiators returns to the Liverpool Olympia tomorrow night, with its biggest MMA show to date.

The Liverpool organisation has built a reputation for nurturing local talent into international fighters in the UFC and again hosts the ITV cameras with a 16-fight card.

Liverpool trio Terry Etim, Jason Tan and Paul "Scouse Assassin" Kelly all fought on the CG promotion numerous times before stepping up to the world’s number one organisation.

And tomorrow 10 Scouse fighters will aim to follow in their footsteps by making a name for themselves on Britain’s biggest domestic show.

Unbeaten Next Generation gym lightweight Paul Sass (3-0-0) has built up a reputation as a deadly submission specialist and fights Martin Stapleton (4-0-0) from Rochdale, a PTI in the Royal Marines.

And head coach Tan predicts an all out war: “This is Sass's toughest test to date. He's never been fitter, and is ready to fight on the floor or go toe to toe with Stapes.”

Another unbeaten local prospect is Team Kaobon's Mark Scanlon who is looking at keeping his perfect (3-0-0) record intact.

“It’s more pressure knowing the fight is on TV, when the cage gate closes you must shut all the distractions out and put your hard training into action.

“Training with world class fighters like Terry Etim gives us a huge advantage.”

Also on the card from Liverpool are Danny Withington, Richie Downes, Jay McGuinness, Dave Faulkner, Greg Johnson, Mark Glover, Lee Chadwick and Kev Axeworthy.

And headlining the ITV4 show is the Cage Gladiators’ vacant heavyweight title fight featuring Holland’s 6ft 9ins Stefan ‘Skyscraper’ Struve and Ulster’s UFC veteran Colin ‘Big C’ Robinson.

With over 36 stone of muscle in the cage this promises to be a slugfest, Struve promising: “I’m coming to take the belt. Nothing will get in my way.”

However, Robinson has fought on the UFC twice before and won’t easily be rolled over.

Some tickets remain. Call the Olympia on 0151 263 6633 for details.
