THERE was disappointment for the local sailors as a number of races were lost to strong winds this weekend - but sunshine got events back on course on Sunday and Monday. On the Mersey there were Liverpool Yacht Club wins for Steve Harrison's Quatro in LBSA Division One, Warwick Telfer's Clairvouyant in Division Two and the Jeff Nelson owned Lady Dorothy in the LBSA section. At Wallasey, Andrew Read in Cormorant claimed the Seabird series race ahead of Geoff Stone in Dovekie and Andy Watson in Sandpiper. The Juniors race went to Abigail Watson in Sandpiper with Bethan Jones claiming the runners-up spot in Calloo. Wallasey also staged a special race for the West Kirby Falcons with seven completing a 10-mile course. Richard Cornah led the way in Sooty Falcon. Hoylake's Champagne series Opera race was claimed by Geoff Watt aboard Country Girl after an extremely close contest with Silvana (Gavin Melling). At West Kirby, Gareth Wright dominated in the Hilbres in Hirondelle. On the Marine Lake in the Cadet Class Wind Seeker (O Owen) took pole position with the Youth Handicap taken by a Laser (J Riley). In the Tranmere Sailing Club Offshore Challenge Race from the Mersey to Llandudno light winds, which had not been forecast, also brought a number of retirements. Ulula, owned by Nick Ogden, won ahead of Geoff Whittaker's Rag-time and Mighty Max (Neil Thomas). All are based at Liverpool YC. On Sunday Liverpool will stage their Littlewoods Trophy Offshore Race. There will be a river start before the fleet heads out into Liverpool Bay. There will be an after race gathering off New Brighton, provided conditions are favourable. The following weekend will see the first of the local Regattas with Royal Mersey the hosts on Saturday, June 11, and Liverpool taking over on the Sunday. |
