Wild Thing is tipped for chart return

Jul 20 2006

Open Diary With Mike Torpey, Liverpool Echo

JOHN DALY rounded off a hard day's night with a mini concert at Liverpool's Cavern Club amid speculation that he may make another foray into the recording studio.

Daly's opening lines to Lost Soul - My mum's dead, my dad put a gun to my head, my wife's in the pen - are the sort of cutting edge lyrics you may expect from a Nick Cave or Steve Earle.

Now spread betting outfit Sporting Index is offering odds on a series of special Wild Thing bets should any punters reckon on a follow up to his autobiographical album My Life, which featured a guest performance by Country legend Willie Nelson.

PR chief Wally Pyrah said: "We are going 33-1 for Daly to release Wild Thing before next year's Open and mixing some fixed odds prices with a couple of spread bets."

'You make my heart sing' is Daly's finishing position in the Open, which Sporting Index expect to be 66th and 'You make everything' is their expectation of him firing 10 birdies.

'Come on, Wild Thing' is the 300-1 for the 40-year-old from Memphis having a No 1 hit before next year's Open and 'Wild Thing I think you move me' is for Daly to win and cry during his acceptance speech on Sunday. That's a tempting 500-1.

WHEN Peter Thomson won his third consecutive Open in 1956 at Hoylake, only two of today's field were even born.

One was another five-times champion Tom Watson, who was six, the other Fred Funk, who was just three weeks old.

As to which of the 156 players will lift the Claret Jug on Sunday, Thomson believes we should look no further than his compatriot Geoff Ogilvy.

"I'm sort of astonished," he said. "I just read a piece about the lack of attention given to Geoff Ogilvy. He's a guy that's at the top of the rankings in the US this year. If you just put it in this calendar year, he's the top dog, won two of the biggest events in the programme.

"He ought to be almost the favourite to win here. And I believe he has got the best chance too. He showed he was better than Mickelson, who made a dreadful mess of that last hole in the US Open.

"I think he deserves to be thought of a bit more. He's 50-1 for God's sake. I think that's ridiculous."

Not bad odds for someone who's already earned $3,919,394 in prize money this season.

IF you're looking for the players in form for the big occasion then stick with tried and trusted names like Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Vijay Singh and Retief Goosen.

Singh is on a streak of seven consecutive top 10s in major championships, the longest on tour. In fact Singh and Mickelson are the only two players with top 10s in the first two majors of 2006.

Woods is seeking to become the first player to win back to back Opens since Tom Watson in 1980/81.

And Goosen is the only player with four consecutive Open top 10s, followed by Woods with three.
