Chambers makes GB team

13:45, Feb 19 2013

Dwain Chambers has been included in Great Britain's team for the European Indoor Championships despite failing to impress on his return from a back problem.

Chambers was unable to compete in the trials in Sheffield before managing fifth on his comeback to the 60 metres at the weekend's British Athletics Grand Prix.

The 34-year-old, who won silver at the meet in Paris two years ago, admitted afterwards he did not want to go to next month's championships in Gothenburg if he was not fully fit. But he has been given the green light to join head coach Peter Eriksson's team, which will be captained by Jenny Meadows.

Meadows only returned to action after 16 months out in Birmingham at the weekend but is selected to defend her 800m crown after going under the qualifying mark.

Double Olympic gold medallist Mo Farah, who won the 3,000m two years ago, is an expected absence from the team after previously indicating he was focusing on the outdoor season.

Meadows will lead a 29-member squad highlighted by the likes of Olympic high jump bronze medallist Robbie Grabarz and in-form pole-vaulter Holly Bleasdale.

The 31-year-old Meadows said: "It's a great honour to be named captain of the GB & NI team. I'm really excited to be given the opportunity to follow Helen Clitheroe, who did such a brilliant job in Paris two years ago."

Clitheroe has opted not to defend her 3,000m title despite going under the qualifying mark as she won in Birmingham.

Great Britain won eight medals at the European Indoors two years ago and Eriksson is hopeful of returning a similar haul.

"I have been really encouraged by the performances so far by the team in 2013, and I'm sure this will continue at the European Indoors," he said. "Jenny (Meadows) has shown that she is a very strong character, with great leadership qualities and experience on this stage - she will be a great captain for the GB & NI team."
