Alastair Cook heralded the dawn of a new era for England's one-day team, following the appointment of Ashley Giles as limited-overs coach, with the vow: 'We'll do it our way'.
Giles has taken over the one-day and Twenty20 reins from Andy Flower, allowing England's director of cricket to focus on the Test team and the two forthcoming Ashes series against Australia. Although Giles will report to Flower, Cook insisted the coach and captain have to forge their own approach if England are to enjoy success in the shortened game.
"I think things will change a little bit. Ashley can't do the same things as Andy Flower, he has to do it his own way," Cook said.
"It is important all three of us are talking. Andy is still the team director, he is still the boss in one way so those communication lines have to be open. But Ashley is in charge of the one-day team so me and him have to do it our way and not check everything back through Andy Flower.
"This is unknown territory. We haven't done it before but it is a bit like when we had the three captains. It was new and I thought it worked really well because of the energy the captains brought to their side. I can see this working the same way on the coaching side."
It is also vital they build a quick and effective relationship given the size of the challenge facing England in their five-match one-day series against India.
England have beaten India just once on their own soil in the last 18 one-day internationals dating back to 2002, losing the last three away series 5-1, 5-0 and 5-0.
England's one-day record in India may be woeful but so was their Test record until Cook led his side to a first series win there in over a quarter of a century. That achievement gives Cook confidence his young squad, shorn of rested stars like Jimmy Anderson and Jonathan Trott, can do something similar in the one-day series.
"Every time you start a tour it is a huge challenge," Cook added. "When I sat here two and a half months ago I said winning a Test series in India would be a great achievement.
"To do that was a great effort by our whole squad and our whole team. Sport moves on very quickly and India in their own back yard as a one-day team is another huge challenge for us as a side."
