India declare as Pujara hits double ton

10:45, Nov 16 2012

England had 18 overs to negotiate to close out day two of the second Test after double-centurion Cheteshwar Pujara had helped India pile up 521 for eight declared.

Pujara's eight-and-a-half-hour tour de force was concluded only when Mahendra Singh Dhoni decided it was time to test England's batsmen, after their bowlers had laboured for more than five sessions at the Sardar Patel Stadium.

Graeme Swann's 14th five-wicket Test haul came at the cost of 144 runs in an India innings featuring major contributions from Pujara (206no), Virender Sehwag (117) and Yuvraj Singh (74).

The latter's was a poignant innings, his first in Tests since his recovery from cancer.

But Pujara's 389-ball marathon, containing 21 fours, had done most to tire the tourists' limbs.

Their challenge now was to get their batting heads on, and try to keep India in the field for the majority of the next three days in an effort to salvage a stalemate.
