Rose blooms in Orlando

17:45, Mar 21 2013

An eagle on the par-five 16th powered Justin Rose into an early lead at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in Orlando.

Rose separated himself from a chasing pack including defending champion Tiger Woods with a strong finish, making up four shots over the final six holes to take a four-stroke lead midway through the opening round.

Rose had dropped a shot on the par-four 11th, but four birdies in a row on the opening nine had already put him in a strong position.

John Rollins was second on the leaderboard with a round of 68, one shot ahead of four other early starters, who were tied for third place on three under.

Woods, back on form following wins at Doral and Torrey Pines, and back in the news thanks to his relationship with star skier Lindsey Vonn, was the biggest of those names, but will not be happy to have let Rose pull clear.

Woods, hoping to reclaim the world number one ranking, had likewise eagled the 16th to stay in touch, but then dropped shots on both the 17th and 18th to sign for a 69.

Lee Westwood was also among the early starters, but bogeyed the 18th to sign for a 71.
