Van der Vaart joins Hamburg

15:45, Aug 31 2012

Hamburg have completed the signing of Rafael van der Vaart from Tottenham with the attacking midfielder returning to the club he represented between 2005 and 2008.

The deal, which has been partly financed by local investor Klaus-Michael Kuhne, went through on Friday afternoon after the Holland international passed a medical and signed a three-year deal.

"I am delighted that Rafael van der Vaart will be playing for Hamburg again," said the Bundesliga club's coach Thorsten Fink on their website. "He will be a strong addition to our team."

Van der Vaart, who could make his debut in Saturday's northern Germany derby against Werder Bremen, said: "This return to Hamburg is a dream come true for me and my family. I owe Hamburg and Klaus-Michael Kuhne huge thanks. I am looking forward to three great years."

Meanwhile, Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas has accused Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy of moving the goalposts at the 11th hour over the transfer of Hugo Lloris.

Aulas claimed negotiations with Levy were the hardest of his 25 years at the top and warned it was "50-50" whether France goalkeeper Lloris joined Spurs before the 11pm transfer deadline. Tottenham have been linked with a £13million move for Lloris all summer and Aulas admitted they had agreed personal terms with the player.

Speaking after the Europa League draw in Monaco, he said: "We have had people speaking all night with Daniel Levy. He talks a lot and goes back on what we've agreed in writing.

"The things as they were at 5am were not the same at 10am. I think we have to make sure we get a certain amount of value because it's important that Hugo can go to a quality club that allows him to do himself justice from a value point of view, so that he can feel right about it.

"I would put it at 50-50 that Hugo goes to Tottenham. Although from the outset, we've submitted to agreements, I would now put it at 50-50 that he'll be going there."

Spurs have also reached agreement for the transfer of Mexico international Giovani Dos Santos to Mallorca.
