Liverpool's Ken Skupski, opened the day's play with a splendid match against Jan-Michael Gambill of the US which could have gone either way.
In the first set Skupski trailed 0-5 in the tie break before going on to win it, and was unable to cash in four match points in the second, which he lost 10-8.
The extra tie-break proved a little too much for Skupski, who lost it by 5-10.
Gambill, was less successul in the mixed doubles, when partnered by Norway's top lady, Caroline Borgerson, he finished losing to Martina and Robert Kendrick.
Surprisingly, Martina told me that she is intending to play in a singles tournament shortly, though I doubt if she willl pay too much attention to that side of her game.
What with a major singles event now involving 10 good players, some first class mixed doubles and a legends event involving Ilie Nastase, Henri Laconte, Mansour Bahrami and Peter McNamara, this current tournament really does have something for everyone.
And with hundreds of children also present some even on court, and two packed refreshment tents filled with people unable to stand the blazing sun, it really was quite a memorable day - even for footballers like Phil Thompson and Ian St John, who were among the crowd.
