Scrap VAT on juniors, demands Rogers

Apr 29 2004

TRANMERE ROVERS chairman Lorraine Rogers has urged the Government to scrap VAT from match admission prices for junior supporters.

Rogers argues that such a step would help clubs in the Nationwide League to maximise support in their localities and strengthen links to the community.

Writing in her regular column for the Liverpool Daily Post today, Rogers said: "I believe there is a very good case for junior admission charges at football matches to be made exempt from VAT.

"As things stand, clubs attempting to attract the next generation of supporters to games and trying to keep prices low have to hand over 17.5% of admission charges to the Customs and Excise.

"Our MPs are often heard championing the cause of Football League clubs and their links to the community. This is an idea that would give us practical help.

"The junior-sized replica kits we sell at our club shop are exempt from VAT. Our tickets could be priced in the same way."
