THIS year's interactive military village at the Southport Air Show & Military Display will be bigger than ever with features from the Army, Navy and Royal Air Force. Organisers of the September 2-3 extravaganza are hoping for good weather but whatever the weekend brings one group of soldiers are sure to get a soaking! Forthe first time this year the Army's RoyalEngineers' team of divers will be bringing their dive tank giving show-goers the chance to 'chat' with divers while they are immersed in water and also challenge them to a game of noughts and crosses on the tank glass. The 10ft tank is usually used by the Army's team of divers on the battlefield for mine clearance. The Royal Engineers will also be bringing their sand buggies, the 4x4 bikes they use to cross sandy terrain to reach broken down vehicles. Some of the military hardwareand activities include: Challenger 2, the main battle tank of the British Army. Challenger 2 is able to travel at speeds of up to 56km per hour by road or 40 km per hour cross-country. The AS90 is a 155mm self-propelled gun which can reach speeds of 53km an hour whichwill also be on displaytogether with the Warrior which has the speed and performance to keep up with the Challenger 2over difficult terrain. The Gazelle is a vital component of anti-tank helicopter operations and is also used in avariety of supporting roles, while the Stormer is ahighly mobile armoured reconnaissance vehicle. The 105mm light guns can fire up to six rounds a minute with a maximum range that exceeds 17km and the Intensive Treatment Unit and Battlefield Ambulance comes complete with surgical bay and operating table. Visitors will also be able to test their skills on the paintball ranges, the abseil tower and aerial rope slide. Other air attractions include the Eurofighter Typhoon, the Royal Air Force's newest fast jet, the Red Arrows, which will close the flying programme at about 5pm on Saturdayand open the programme at 11.45am on Sunday, and The Blades, who provided the star-studded Beckham's World Cup send-off party. On show weekend the ground attractions, central arena and model aircraft displays start from 9am and the main flying programme takes off from around midday. Tickets in advance cost £5 and on the day £7. Accompanied children under seven areadmitted free.
