Joleon Lescott is spurred on by old rivalry with Germany

Nov 19 2008

JOLEON LESCOTT is relishing the prospect of playing in England’s “massive” friendly with Germany today.

The last time England played Germany on their home soil was in 2001 when they came away with a 5-1 victory.

That was only one match in a long history of memorable encounters between the two nations, something Lescott believes adds extra significance to this week’s match.

“It’s massive between the two nations and we are great rivals in all sports, but in football even more so,” the Everton defender said. “They’ll be looking to get one over us as much as we are to do the same.

“I think any game that you’re involved in for your country is massive, but a fixture like this is one that you probably look forward to more than most.” The build-up to the match has been overshadowed by the withdrawal of several key players from the England squad.

One notable absentee from the Three Lions line-up will be Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand, who has not travelled to Germany because of a back injury.

And 26-year-old Lescott, who has six caps, believes he is now experienced enough to put in a good performance should manager Fabio Capello call on him to replace Ferdinand.

“The last time I was one of the less experienced players, so this time I’m a bit more experienced than some of the lads and it’s quite a strange feeling,” he said.

“It’s a great squad and everyone helps each other out, and we’re all pushing in the same direction.

“I’m excited to be involved in this game, I’m raring to go if the manager needs me.”

Lescott has been impressed with the start Capello has made as manager.

He said: “He has great experience, obviously, and personally, for me, it’s great to be working with someone like him.

“The experience he and his coaching staff have from a defending point of view is great for me to have. Confidence is a massive thing in football and the year is definitely ending on a high anyway, especially with four wins from four in the qualifying.”
