OLDHAM ATHLETIC manager John Sheridan is facing a potential selection crisis ahead of tomorrow’s FA Cup third round tie at Goodison Park with over half of the side that won 3-1 at Leeds United on New Year’s Day possibly missing.
Neal Trotman is suspended while there are serious injury doubts over goalkeeper Mark Crossley (ankle), Chris Taylor (hamstring) and striker Lee Hughes (groin) who were all hurt at Elland Road.
The Latics believe there is little likelihood of reviving a deal for left-back Ryan Bertrand, who has returned to Chelsea and it looks likely the 18-year-old could be loaned out again, but to a club in the Championship with Hull City and Leicester City potential suitors.
On-loan Neil Kilkenny, 22, must complete a permanent transfer from Birmingham City by noon today to be eligible to play in a cup clash which the visitors have sold more than 5,000 tickets for.
Oldham, who are vying with Doncaster Rovers for Kilkenny’s signature, have not given up hope of landing Tim Cahill’s Australia international team-mate.
They have agreed a six-figure transfer fee and also a package which would make Kilkenny the highest-paid player at Boundary Park.
Oldham’s chief executive Alan Hardy explained: “I spoke to Neil on Wednesday and I expressed as strongly as I can that we would love him to join us, something which also applies to the fans.”
