"I have seen signs from Richard in training that have been very good and he realises there is competition and he has to prove that he can do it again," he said. "He is training really well and if Tim Howard is not fully adjusted we know he is there.
"He is a super professional, and is an excellent trainer. You could never fault him on that score. We will wait to see how he responds."
Young goalkeepers Iain Turner and John Ruddy, who both appeared for the first team last season, are also waiting in the wings.
And Moyes added: "I think the goalkeeping situation is pretty good, and we need to try and keep pushing the young ones as well. We shouldn't forget about them. We don't want to stop their progression.
"Maybe at a different time we will look at loaning one of them out to a good quality side."
