Best hope of success is in cup

Oct 26 2004

By Andy Gray, Liverpool Echo

Carling Cup

I'VE often described the Carling Cup as a competition which can be a catalyst to a club's season.

Everton have already made such a great start to the season that they don't need a catalyst, but equally the Blues are not in a position yet where tomorrow night's tie with Preston can be described as a nuisance.

The Carling Cup still offers Everton's best chance of success this season.

If I was David Moyes I would be tempted to make one or two changes, maybe just rest a couple of players feeling the effects from Saturday, but I certainly wouldn't even consider the kind of wholesale changes Liverpool are making tonight.

Continuity has been behind Everton's success so far this season and David will not want to deviate from that.

Besides, Preston are not going to offer an easy route into the next round for Everton, especially with a huge army of travelling fans roaring them on.

The Carling Cup is important to Everton, and I'm sure the side David Moyes sends out tomorrow will reflect that.
