Date of birth: 12/09/1974
Former clubs: Sporting Lisbon, Maritimo, Uniao Leiria, Porto

THE experienced Portuguese full back was signed in August 2005 to replace the injured Alessandro Pistone from Porto for an undiclosed fee.

A Champions League winner with Jose Mourinho's Porto in 2004, Valente was also a member of the Portugal team beaten in the final of Euro 2004 by Greece.

He has showed strong tackling abilities and has grown in confidence after taking time to adjust to the pace of Premiership football.

Valente was sidelined through injury for the first few months of the 2005/6 campaign, but returned to feature in the last league game of the season.

Injury also kept Valente out of first team action for much of the 2006/7 season but this did not stop Everton from offering him a contract extension, keeping him at the club until 2008.

The player featured in the Portugal side which knocked England out of the World Cup in Germany, performing well for his country.

He is set to continue as a Portugese international, being picked as part of the squad battling to qualify for the Euro 2008 competition.
