Goals key to better season

May 9 2006

By Andy Gray, Liverpool Echo

IF it hadn't been for Duncan Ferguson's farewell goal, Everton's season would have ended with a whimper.

But David Moyes will try and take the positives from a campaign which at one stage looked like it might have been disastrous.

There have been some positives, but not enough - and the most alarming aspect without any shadow of a doubt has been the lack of goals throughout the team.

Just 34 Premier-ship goals is not good enough - and David has to find another 10 or 15 goals from somewhere as a matter of urgency.

Whether those goals come from the forward line, from midfield - or from both - is immaterial.

What is vital is that Everton increase their firepower.

There is a fine line between the disappointing season Everton have endured, and the incredible campaign they had 12 months previously.

Just the extra six points had Everton managed to beat relegated Sunderland, Birmingham and West Brom at Goodison would have seen them in a UEFA Cup chasing place - and that's even with the dreadful start they made.

Everton can enjoy a much better season next time out . . . but to do so they must start scoring more goals.
