Kenyon: He was a legend who loved the Blues

Apr 26 2007

by David Jones, Liverpool Echo

ROGER KENYON had the distinction of playing with Alan Ball at Everton and in the States.

The former central defender, who played at Goodison with the midfield star in the late Sixties, said: “He was the Ball of Fire – that typifies him. He set an example to everyone in training and dedication – I have never seen anyone train as hard as him.

“He was the real pro.

“He is right up there with the best, even though he did not have as long with Everton as the likes of Labby, but that was through no fault of his own. Harry Catterick cashed in on him at the time. He was the youngest member of the England squad that won the World Cup and was a great player.

“I had known him since I was a kid, right through until he left Everton. I later played with him in Vancouver in the American league.

“It was a great shock to hear the news. Gary Jones rang me to tell me.

“Alan was as fit as hell. He always looked after himself and earlier this year spent a month and a half in Barbados as he usually did.

“When I last saw him at the Hall of Fame dinner in March the reception he got was fantastic.

“I often spoke to him and he always asked about any news from the club. He loved Everton and loved to tell stories of his days at Goodison.

“He was simply a legend.”
