Everton FC should go all-out for Carling Cup success WINNING any cup this season would be warmly received but wouldn’t it make sense to target the easiest? Everton start their Carling Cup campaign tomorrow night with a trip to Hull, just six days after getting their quest for Europa League glory off to a flying start against AEK Athens. Going all the way to Hamburg would be a magnificent achievement and would be a huge feather in David Moyes’ cap, which would be wildly celebrated. But how would you feel if you were told that our interest in Europe would end at the round of 16 yet we won the Carling Cup? Overjoyed, I’d say. There is a great kudos in playing in Europe and the club enjoy being involved in it but, realistically, the Carling Cup offers the best chance of success and it’s one we should doing everything to flourish in. We are, after all, only three wins from the semi-finals, whereas another 13 fixtures must be fulfilled to reach a similar stage in the Europa League. Hopefully, then, we will dismiss Hull with confidence tomorrow night and move a step closer to the thing that every Evertonian wants – a glistening trophy being brought back home. So sorry for Portsmouth boss Paul Hart – but Everton FC must pile on the misery THERE is nothing worse than when you see a good man put in an impossible situation. Paul Hart is someone I know from my days at Leeds and he was responsible for nurturing young talents like Alan Smith, Paul Robinson, Jonathan Woodgate and Harry Kewell before they got into the first team. He ruled things with an iron fist and I know the lads used to call him Darth Vader because they were so scared of getting on his wrong side. However, he now finds himself struggling to keep his head above water at Portsmouth and the turnover of players at Fratton Park has been alarming, to say the least. Everything seems cloak and dagger down there behind the scenes and there doesn’t seem to be any direction, which will only have a detrimental effect on the players there. I hope Paul gets out of trouble but I also hope they don’t recover until after Everton’s visit – we need points just as much as they do now.
