Night fever!

Feb 20 2007

by Tony Cottee, Liverpool Echo

Goodison Park

GOODISON PARK under floodlights is a traditionally atmospheric arena.

Which is why I’ll be feeling a touch of envy tomorrow night.

While I’ll be watching Everton’s weekend opponents, Watford, against Wigan, my favourite opponents will face the Toffees under the lights.

As a player Spurs were always the opposition I most looked forward to facing.

I scored on my West Ham debut against Tottenham, scored my 100th league goal for Everton and my 200th for Leicester against them as well.

I also scored a Goodison hat-trick against Tottenham and they always seemed to be a lucky club for me.

I hope that continues tomorrow night in what is a significant fixture for the Blues.

Tottenham have been woeful travellers all season, but just days before coming to Goodison they went to Craven Cottage and put four past Fulham.

The problem with Spurs, however, is that they are consistently inconsistent.

Everton’s fortunes tomorrow could depend on whether the Tottenham which turned up at Fulham present themselves, or the Tottenham which turned up at Sheffield United recently.

I hope it’s the latter.

Spurs went to Craven Cottage with two defensive midfielders in Zakora and Tainio which gave Keane, Mido, Lennon and Malbranque the licence to get forward.

Everton will have to counter that, as well as overcoming the absence through suspension of Tim Cahill.

The good thing for David Moyes, however, is that he has options.

Victor Anichebe or James Beattie could come in to form a 4-4-2, or Leon Osman could come back from a suspension of his own to maintain the 4-4-1-1 system which has worked so well in recent weeks.

Whoever plays, it’s important Everton take the game to Tottenham.

With rock-bottom Watford looming on Saturday, Everton should really be targeting six points from their next two games.

Four points would not be disastrous – and football being football you’re never quite sure how the points will come about.

But back-to-back wins would put Everton in a strong position for the Spring run-in.

Whatever happens tomorrow, though, I’m sure the atmosphere will be excellent.

I don’t know what it is about night matches at Goodison, but there’s definitely a sense of something different in the air about them.

Perhaps it’s the fact that so many people have been at work all day and are letting off a bit of steam, or maybe it’s the floodlights creating a different atmosphere, but there’s definitely something different about night matches at Goodison Park.

Thrilled over Howard deal >>>
