Turner will learn from his Goodison blunder

May 1 2007

by Tony Cottee, Liverpool Echo

Iain Turner

I WAS in the second best place to enjoy the first hour of Everton's match against Manchester United - in the press lounge at Manchester City!

The roar which went up when Everton scored their second was probably second only to that at Goodison Park.

I'd popped out to say hello to Martin O'Neill and his backroom staff soon after Iain Turner dropped that fateful cross, and what happened next wasn't a great surprise.

United were given fresh impetus, Everton's confidence was sorely knocked and there was only one winner from that point on.

If anything it was probably 'too easy' across for the youngster to take.

It's like a young striker who is through on goal for a tap in, already thinking about his celebration when he blazes the ball over.

Turner was probably thinking about where he was going to distribute the ball next.

I really felt for him because he'd performed well up to that point and made a number of decent stops.

I'd agree with David Moyes that selecting the youngster was the right thing to do. He knows what Richard Wright can do, he's less aware of Turner's ability and this was an opportunity for him to advertise his talents.

He will get other opportunities and will be better equipped to take them as a result of this experience.

Even Big Nev made one or two high profile errors early in his career - and it didn't do him much harm!
