RAFA BENITEZ today called on his players to make amends for their double cup misery over Arsenal when they take on the Gunners at Anfield tomorrow. Arsene Wenger’s side were responsible for the most painful week in Liverpool’s season when they dumped the Reds out of the FA and Carling Cup within the space of four, traumatic days. The 6-3 loss at Anfield was especially painful, and Benitez admits it will be impossible not to think about those defeats as the sides meet again. “I’m sure that will be a motivation for the players, but one I hope will help in a positive way,” said the Reds boss. “We all remember what happened, but now we have a different game in a different competition and situation. “Always when you play Arsenal you know it’s a big game and important. We know we have to think about using our whole squad because of the game against Eindhoven to come, but we also know we have to make sure we finish in the top four. We know if we can win this game, we will be in a stronger position to do that and it will also give us confidence before the Champions League game. “This could be the perfect game for us before this, because Arsenal and PSV play a similar type of style with short passes and speed on the counter-attack.” Benitez welcomed back the international contingent to Melwood yesterday and will be monitoring fitness before deciding whether to rest star names for Europe. He’s already hinted squad players who’ve been working on Merseyside for the last two weeks, such as Jermaine Pennant, Robbie Fowler and Peter Crouch, have more chance of featuring on Saturday. Tomorrow will see new owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks watch the team for the first time since securing unconditional ownership. Benitez is looking forward to his much publicised meeting with the pair. “We will meet after the game. I had contact with the owners over the last few weeks, everything was positive and I’m looking forward to speaking to them this weekend,” said Benitez. |
