Instead, the Liverpool manager will send his team out with the message to extend an enviable Champions League away record and end their Stamford Bridge goal drought. Benitez’s men have lost only two of their last 16 European encounters on the road, one of which was in a meaningless match against Galatasaray earlier this season with qualification from the group stage already assured. Since then, first-leg victories at Barcelona and PSV Eindhoven have proven the foundation for progress to the last four, and Benitez is calling for a hat-trick of away wins tonight. “It is important for us to work really hard in defence and try to do the right things in attack,” he says. “My idea is to score, and see if it is possible to win. “We know the statistics of Chelsea at home; they are really good in defence. They win a lot of games. It is difficult to score and beat them. “Normally at home you expect to win, to score goals, and go to the second leg with a good result. “If we can stay 0-0, close to the end I am sure they will try to push and player higher and they will be under pressure. This is normal. “We will be tight as well. It is not easy to score a lot of goals in this kind of games – but I was thinking the same before Manchester United against Roma!” History is against Liverpool, however. They have only won once at Stamford Bridge since 1990 and have yet to score after five visits under Benitez. But the Spaniard adds: “The majority of teams have the same problem there, because they have very good statistics in defence. “Now in the league, they concede less goals than anyone and we are in second position. “Our aim is to approach this game in the same way that we did against Barcelona, we want to win and we want to score. “It may be more difficult because Chelsea do not concede many goals. “But we will be organised and aim to score a goal that will give us so much more to utilise for the second leg. “Away goals are so important, we always try to go forward to score. “It will be more difficult at Chelsea but we will be trying to do that.” |
