Billy Liddell and Ian St John inducted into Scotland’s Hall of Fame

Nov 20 2008

by James Pearce, Liverpool Echo

LIVERPOOL legends Billy Liddell and Ian St John were inducted into Scotland’s Hall of Fame at Hampden Park.

Football fans from all over the world nominated players whom they thought should be recognised for their contribution to Scottish football.

Then a panel of experts from football and the media considered the nominees and whittled them down to eight new inductees.

Liddell spent his entire career from 1938 to 1961 with the Anfield club, scoring 228 goals in 534 appearances. Liddell, who died in 2001, also played 28 games for Scotland, scoring six times.

St John’s 80 goals in 113 games for Motherwell earned him a move to Liverpool in 1961, becoming the club’s record signing for £37,500.

He formed a formidable strike partnership with Roger Hunt and clocked up 118 goals in 425 games before being sold to Coventry in 1970.

The 70-year-old, who was at the ceremony, won 21 caps for his country and scored nine goals.
