EX-TORY leader Michael Howard will teach a novice about the history of Liverpool Football Club in a new reality TV series about celebrity hobbies. The man who tried – and failed – to become Prime Minister will instead take dancer Wayne Sleep to his beloved Anfield, where the dancer will learn about the club’s trophy-rich past. Filming will take place within the next week for the first episode of the show, entitled Don’t Call Me Stupid, to be broadcast in late summer. However, plans for Mr Howard to introduce Mr Sleep to the Liverpool players had to be scrapped because they will be preparing for their Champions League semi-final. Nevertheless, the programme will allow Mr Howard to renew his love affair with Anfield, which was born when he twice stood for Parliament in Liverpool in 1966 and 1970. The MP told the Daily Post: “The theme of the programme is that people have different passions and mine is Liverpool Football Club. “However, I know very little about musical theatre, so Wayne Sleep will teach me about that and then we will both have to answer questions. “I will show Wayne around Anfield, but I don’t think we will be allowed to play on the pitch. I wouldn’t want the players to be distracted from their important match next week!” Over the years, Mr Howard, who was born in Llanelli and represents a constituency in Kent, has repeatedly spoken of his Liverpool allegiance, sometimes to his embarrassment. Three years ago, he was forced to apologise in writing to then manager Gerard Houllier, after calling for him to be sacked following a string of poor results. Later, Labour MP Peter Kilfoyle branded him a “cheapskate” when it emerged Mr Howard writes to the club so he can enjoy matches for free in the Anfield director’s box. Nevertheless, after Chelsea defeated Liverpool on the eve of a Tory conference, Mr Howard opened his speech by joking he also expected the Blues to beat the Reds at the coming election. An ITV spokesman said: “The programme is still in its planning stage.” |
