JAMIE CARRAGHER was celebrating today after his sports restaurant landed a healthy food award.
Cafe Sports England is only the second restaurant in Liverpool to receive the Greater Merseyside Food Charter Award.
The Liverpool FC star said he was delighted his healthy-eating venture in Sir Thomas Street had been given the mark.
He told the ECHO:”With two kids of my own I know how hard it can be to find a good family restaurant where we can relax, enjoy our food and have a choice of healthy options.
“The restaurant is a place where families can come and enjoy themselves. My kids love the healthy pizzas and the smoothies.”
The defender’s Liverpool team-mates past and present have also showed their support.
Carragher, 30, said: “The lads have been great. They like the menu and we’ve also had a lot of support from the Everton players.
“With my sporting background I was well informed about healthy eating. I wanted the restaurant to help in the battle against childhood obesity by promoting healthy eating among youngsters.
“It’s great for young lads to come in and eat the type of food football players eat. To succeed in any sport you’ve got to have a talent but you’ve got to eat well too.”
The menu was designed by a nutritionist and focuses on meals with lower fat, sugar and salt.
The food charter is awarded by England’s biggest coronary heart disease prevention charity Heart of Mersey, supported by Sefton primary care trust, to establishments that make a conscious effort to serve heart-healthy food.
Meanwhile, Aintree Racecourse has also been awarded the Greater Merseyside Food Charter.
