Liverpool officials were today formulating a response amid growing anger at what many close to the manager believe is a spineless attack on the Reds boss.
Benitez rejected overtures from Real Madrid a few months ago, and unless Liverpool act swiftly to emphasise the remarks don't reflect the overall view of the board who have only just handed Benitez a new contract, there is a clear danger he'll become unsettled.
There was a furious reaction from fans' groups.
Secretary of the Merseyside branch of the Liverpool supporters' club, Les Lawson, said: "I find it totally unbelievable a member of the Liverpool board would criticise the managerwho won the Champions League in his first season, with the worst squad since Bill Shankly arrived at the club.
"He then wonthe FA Cup in his second season and won more league points in a season for Liverpool since the Premier-ship began last year.
"Whoever is responsible for these comments is completely out of touch with how Liverpool fans think, and I would have thought he'd be more concerned with working towards attracting the investment which would help Rafa build a team to challenge Chelsea."
