ROBBIE FOWLER has denied reports he is set to join Tranmere as manager John Barnes rekindled memories of Rovers’ exciting past by signing of Alan Mahon.

Report last night suggested that Fowler is about to abandon his two year contract with Australian A League club North Queensland Fury to link up with former Liverpool team-mate John Barnes at Tranmere Rovers.

However, Fowler said today: “I’ve got a two-year contract with North Queensland Fury and I’ll see it out. I’m a man of my word. There is nothing in this. My family has just arrived out here. They would not have travelled all this way if I had any intention to leave.”

Fowler, 34, agreed to join Fury, a new Australian A League Franchise, in December after completing a short spell with Blackburn.

Fury manager Brett Judge said: “We’ve spoken to Robbie and there is no truth in this at all.”

One player who has joined Tranmere is former favourite Mahon.

The 31-year-old Irish midfielder, who was a rising star when he he figured in some of Rovers’ giantkilling cup exploits almost a decade ago, agreed a three-year contract.

Mahon, whose professional career began at Prenton Park in 1995, was looking for a new club after being released by Burnley at the end of last season.

Barnes said: “It’s great to have Alan back as he is a very talented midfielder.

“We’re fortunate to have got a player of Alan’s quality to commit himself to the club for three seasons. He is a former favourite of the Tranmere fans and I’m sure they’ll look forward to seeing him in action again at Prenton Park.

“He will add experience to what will be a young squad next season.”

Mahon added: “I’m thrilled to come back to the club that started my career.

“The new management team has impressed me and I can’t wait to get started.”

Mahon made made 144 appearances in his first spell with Tranmere and was a member of the side that reached the League Cup Final at Wembley in 2000.

He joined Sporting Lisbon in 2000 and played Champions League Football before returning to England in a £1.5 million move to Blackburn Rovers a year later. Mahon spent three seasons at Ewood Park before joining Wigan in 2004 and then Burnley in 2006.

The Dubliner is the second experienced player to sign up for the new Barnes/Jason McAteer management partnership after striker Ian Moore agreed a new two-year deal last week.
