There's also something of the devil in him. One or two colourful incidents off the park as well as on it have made Diouf a star attraction throughout his young career.
But Bergues has calmed fears the Reds have signed a loose cannon, sending him to Liverpool with a glowing reference.
"I've never found him difficult. He has his own personality, but you win wars with people with strong personalities rather than people who are sheep," says Bergues.
"In his own country he is a star. He always has plenty of people around him and he is the kind of person who always wants to help. He will be liked by his team mates and the fans and I've no doubt he will be a big hero of The Kop.
"He is a person who knows what he wants to achieve. Sometimes you have to control him and help him, but he is still young."
Bergues left Anfield just days after the club completed the treble of 2001.
He said: "My heart is still red and I regret not having the chance to say goodbye to the fans. I still speak to Gerard, Sammy, Joe and Phil and always look for Liverpool's results."
The French coach has already made his mark on the Liverpool revival. With he sale of Diouf, he may have helped put the finishing touch to the rebuilding process he and Houllier started.
