RAFAEL BENITEZ today quit Valencia, clearing the way for his switch to Liverpool. Benitez (left) rejected last ditch efforts to keep him in Spain and announced he was leaving the club. Another lengthy meeting yesterday between the main director of Valencia, Manuel Llorente, and Benitez's agent, ended without agreement. Valencia spokesman Jordi Brusola had earlier said: "Rafa Benitez is set to announce his decision today on whether or not he is going to extend his contract at Valencia." Earlier, Llorente revealed: "Tomorrow (Tuesday) will be the moment we have a decision. I have to be realistic." The developments will be celebrated at Anfield as Liverpool edge closer to securing the services of their prime target. Valencia tried desperately to keep the man who's just won a league and UEFA Cup double, accepting all the changes he's called for during the course of his reign. They offered him a two year extension to his current contract, with the option of a further season, as well as more control of team affairs. But the Benitez camp cplained the concessions arrived too late. Only when the league title and UEFA Cup was secure - and Liverpool's interest became known - did the club President Jaime Orti show a desire to discuss new terms. Benitez had already set his heart set on a move to Anfield. But today he remained tight-lipped about his next destination as he said: "I've taken one of the most difficult decisions of my sporting life. I value very positively the intention of the club of trying to reach an agreement. But my psychological and physical fatigue has made me consider my future. "I want to thank everybody for their help in the last three years, especially the fans. "I've two daughters. One is from Valencia and they both love Valencia. Valencia will always be in my heart." |
