LIVERPOOL chief executive Rick Parry's mobile has been pumped with so many goodwill messages and texts since last Wednesday, he admits it's in danger of overload. Parry is currently in Barbados on a pre-arranged coaching tour with the club's Academy coaches, where he says news of Liverpool's victory has ensured the partying hasn't stopped. The coincidental presence of HMS Liverpool in the Caribbean has assisted the flowing of champagne. "It's funny because we noticed in the ECHO a few months ago HMS Liverpool would be here when we were due to arrive," explained Parry. "We got in touch with the captain and he invited us on board for a function on Friday night, so the celebrations have gone from Anfield to Barbados. We've promised to take the European Cup on board the next time it's docked in Liverpool." The Caribbean is the ideal place for Parry to chill out following a frantic few days which he admits he's still coming to terms with. The images of Thursday night when the cup was shown to an adoring public will linger in the memory forever. "Without doubt, the scenes eclipsed those of 2001 when we won those three cups," said Parry. "I remember on that parade there were times when the bus picked up speed because there were quieter points on the route. Not this time. "There were more people out to see us than live in the city of Liverpool. "Xabi Alonso told me he was astonished by the scenes. I pointed out to him Chelsea attracted 150,000 for their Premiership parade. We had 750,000. That's the size of our club. "Around Anfield on St George's Hall was particularly astonishing. "We were all still in a blur after the night before. The whole experience was like the unbelievable turning into a reality. For some of us, seeing the supporters on the streets made it sink in just what the club had achieved. "If some of our newer players didn't know already what this football club means to the people in this city, they do now. "I must add it was great to see a significant number of Evertonians on the route, too. That was a terrific gesture. When I flew out to Barbados from Manchester Airport on Friday, there were even United fans coming up to me and congratulating the club on its success." It's not only Liverpool's deadliest rivals who've been charitable in their praise. "We've received messages from clubs all over the world. David Dein, from Arsenal, has been wishing us well at every stage of the competition," explained Parry. |
