Martina Navratilova and Ivan Ljubicic with the European Cup

FOR most people, the chance to get up close to the European Cup would be an amazing experience.

But it all proved too much for tennis star Ivan Ljubicic when he came face to face with the trophy at Anfield yesterday.

The AC Milan supporter, who is playing in the Liverbird Developments Liverpool International Tennis Tournament, pulled his shirt over his head to avoid being reminded of Liverpool's historic victory over the team he supports a fortnight ago.

But after a quick word from competitor Martina Navratilova and former Liverpool player and assistant coach Phil Thompson, Ljubicic came out of his makeshift shell and posed for photos, albeit through gritted teeth.

The professional tennis tournament, at Calderstones Park, starts today at 11am.

Legends playing during the five-day event include Pat Cash, Henri Leconte and Jan-Michael Gambill.

For tickets, starting at £10, call 0151 724 6712.
