(The largest knitted scarf in Liverpool)

Christina and her scarf

REDS fan Christina Brockway is knitting her way into the history books.

The 83-year-old Liverpool supporter has created a 450ft long scarf in honour of her footballing heroes.

The great-grandmother from Whiston started knitting her red and white stripey tribute when the Reds won the treble in 2001 - and has not stopped.

She was still keeping her needles busy when Liverpool became the champions of Europe in May.

Now her woollen creation is long enough to cover the length of the pitch at Anfield at least three times.

Mrs Brockway said: "I have been a Liverpool fan all my life - they are the greatest team on Earth. As soon as I get up in the morning and have my breakfast I start knitting. I am miserable, and bored, when I run out of wool.

"I used to go to the Liverpool home games every week when I was younger. My four sons would be in the Kop and me and my daughter would be at the other end."

The pensioner's grandchildren keep her wool supply topped up and Mrs Brockway has got through hundreds of balls in the past four years.

She starts knitting just after breakfast and doesn't leave her needles idle for long for the rest of the day.

By bedtime she has put in five hours work - seven days a week.

And the knitting shows no sign of stopping.

Mrs Brockway is going to keep adding stripes to the scarf as long as she is able.

She followed her heroes to Wembley in the 60s and 70s and brought another of her scarves with her.

Her knitting skills have created four huge scarves over the years with one helping to raise £16,000 for the Hillsborough appeal.

Grandchildren Joanne and David Brockway are proud of their nan's passion.

Joanne, 19, said: "She's one of the biggest Liverpool fans in the world and she has been from the day she was born.

"I feel that my nan is an inspiration to us all and her support for Liverpool Football Club over the past 83 years has been outstanding. Even through the hard times she has remained their number one fan."

David, 21, said: "It is an amazing achievement. I would love it if the club could put it in the museum at Anfield. I think all that knitting keeps her fit and alert."
