Reina's bid for Clem's record

Apr 13 2006

By Chris Bascombe, Liverpool Echo

Jose 'Pepe' Reina

PEPE REINA will eclipse the great Ray Clemence if Liverpool's defensive meanness continues at Ewood Park this Sunday - and today the Anfield legend paid his own tribute to the new number one.

Reina has already re-written the record books once in his debut season, having gone longer than any Liverpool keeper in history without conceding a goal.

But as he prepares for his 50th appearance for his new club, Reina has another proud landmark in sight.

If he concedes no more than twice in Lancashire this weekend, the Spaniard will beat Clemence's impressive goals against record during his first 50 games for Liverpool.

Reina has kept 29 clean sheets in 49 games. That's three more than Clemence achieved over the same period following his debut in 1969.

The Spanish stopper has been beaten 29 times, compared to the 32 conceded by Clemence in the 1970-71 season.

Liverpool's defence is also two clean sheets away from equalling a club record 34 shut-outs in a season.
