Jermaine Pennant in action for Birmingham

LIVERPOOL have not made a bid for Birmingham midfielder Jermaine Pennant.

But an offer could be imminent over the weekend after Rafael Benitez has decided whether the winger is worth Birmingham's £6/7m asking price.

The Reds have always had Pennant as first choice back-up if their lengthy pursuit of Seville's Daniel Alves was unsuccessful.

With the Spanish club more determined than ever to keep hold of the Brazilian, Benitez may be forced to admit defeat and turn his attention to St Andrews.

Reds chief executive Rick Parry confirmed today: "We have not made a bid for Jermaine Pennant," but he added that the Reds were continuing to monitor his situation.

The Reds play their second pre-season friendly tomorrow at Crewe Alexandra, with fans hoping to get a first glimpse of winger Mark Gonzalez after he was forced to sit out last weekend's opener at Wrexham.

"I hope I can make an impact in English football straightaway and I hope that all my homework stands me in good stead," said Gonzalez, who watched lots of Liverpool's matches on television last season.

"If it takes me a little while to find my feet then I would think that is only normal.

"I'm new here and what I will have to do is train hard and play hard when I get the chance if I want to really stake my claim for a place in the first team."
