LIVERPOOL'S pursuit of World Cup defender Lucas Neill ended in disappointment last night - as Jan Kromkamp headed back to his homeland.
Rafael Benitez had hoped to broker a deal for the Blackburn Rovers player by offering Stephen Warnock as part of the package. But despite high hopes earlier in the day the transfer window closed with no word from either club about an agreement.
The two clubs were unable to agree the value attached to the proposed transfer, with Rovers pricing the 28-year-old Australian higher than Liverpool were prepared to go as manager Benitez sought defensive reinforcements with Kromkamp completing his expected move to PSV Eindhoven.
Reports in Holland put the transfer fee at £1.75million, with Kromkamp agreeing a five-year deal.
