Since his goalscoring debut against Aston Villa in 1997, Carragher has filled in at centre-half, right back, left back and his original position of centre midfield, before bedding in as an accomplished centre half, considered to be amongst the game's finest.
On the international stage, Carragher captained the England Under-21 side in a 4-1 win against Denmark - later setting a new record for appearances at that level when playing against Argentina - and made his first England senior appearance as substitute against Hungary in April 1999. Bizarrely he has never become a regular fixture in the national side despite clearly being among the best defenders in the country but his worth has never been in question to Liverpool supporters.
A solid and consistent performer in Liverpool's treble winning season of 2000-01, he has since gone on to become the cornerstone of the Liverpool defence, playing a vital role in the Reds' Champions League success of 2004-05 and captaining the side to Super Cup success against CSKA Moscow in Monaco in August 2005.
