Skipper of Liverpool and the driving force of the Reds' midfield, Steven Gerrard fulfilled a lifetime's ambition when he captained his boyhood idols to Champions League glory in May 2005.

It was his headed goal which began the amazing comeback against AC Milan in Istanbul, which culminated in Liverpool's fifth European Cup win.

Having made his way through the ranks, Gerrard - then only 18 - made his debut in a UEFA Cup tie against Celta Vigo in November 1998.

A product of the Liverpool Academy, Gerrard is versatile enough to have played at right back and even right midfield, but it is at centre midfield where he has made his mark.

Indeed, his early performances in a Liverpool shirt were rewarded when he was called up to the England national squad for Euro 2000.

It was ex-Anfield favourite Kevin Keegan who handed Gerrard his full England debut against Ukraine in May 2000. He has since gone on to establish himself as a regular in the national side.

Although missing out on the 2002 World Cup through injury, Gerrard did take part in Euro 2004 in Portugal, scoring one goal during the tournament.

Gerrard also captained Liverpool to FA Cup glory in May 2006, scoring twice in the final itself against West Ham, including a last minute wonder goal, to rescue the Reds and take the match to extra-time.

In what was a gruelling 2005/06 season, he netted an impressive 22 goals in all competitions.

He also starred for England in their 2006 World Cup campaign, scoring twice.

Tough in the tackle, and a sublime passer of the ball, Gerrard is capable of scoring spectacular goals and is under contract at Anfield until 2011.
